Sioux Narrows Watch

What is Sioux Narrows Watch?

Sioux Narrows Watch is a program designed to provide a sense of security throughout the community, as well as your home, business, or temporary residence. Sioux Narrows Watch is an organized group of citizens watching out for their neighbour’s properties.

This community crime prevention initiative contains three components;

1)         Community Involvement – patrols, checking on your neighbour’s property

2)         Property Identification or “target hardening”

3)         OPP support – dedicated police investigative teams

Community Involvement

As a member of the community, you become involved by simply reporting suspicious persons or activity to the police.

You are encouraged to:

·         record license numbers and descriptions of any suspicious vehicles or boats in your neighbourhood,

·         watch for strangers in your neighbourhood, individuals who perhaps don’t belong there,

·         watch for persons taking “shortcuts” through your property,

·         watch for vehicles or boats making repeat visits through your neighbourhood,

BE SURE to record the date and time along with a description,

EACH TIME you gather information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem at the time, phone it in immediately to the;

Ontario Provincial Police @

1-888-310-1122

Property Identification or “target hardening”

When theft occurs, in most cases the stolen property is not actually kept by the person(s) committing the crime. In fact, many criminals specialize in the theft of certain items that they re-sell in bulk. As a result victims often find that only specific items have been stolen, while other valuable items have been left untouched. Items that may be traced back to the owner are not as appealing to criminals.

Engraver is available at the Sioux Narrows Township Office (807) 226-5241

The Ontario Provincial Police have made an engraver available in Sioux Narrows. The Sioux Narrows municipal office has offered to assist us with respect to signing out the engraver. To avoid disappointment, we recommend reserving the engraver well in advance. The office is open Monday thru Friday from 9am to 4pm.

Simply phone (807) 226-5241 to reserve the engraver. It may be signed out for a maximum of 2-days at a time.

Pick up one day @ 9am and return the following day by 3pm.

The OPP advises that when you engrave your property; engrave each item with your driver’s license. This helps the OPP to recover and return your property to you. If you possess a U.S. driver’s license, please engrave your license number and include the abbreviated letters of the state your license was issued in. Should you find your driver’s license is too long, you may engrave your property using your license plate number; remember to include your Province or State.

Items Targeted by Thieves

Targeted items include portable goods such as electronics, tools, liquor and firearms. Our survey also indicated fishing rods, reels, tackle, chain saws and boats and motors had been stolen.

Appearance

Whenever possible, your property should have an appearance of being occupied. This may be accomplished by using motion sensors or timers for outdoor lights, as well as timers for interior lights. Having a timer on the television or leaving the radio on will also help deter possible burglars.

For those of you “leaving” for extended periods of time. If you have your name on a sign on your property, consider removing it while you are away. Especially if you have disconnected your telephone. Thieves may see your name on your sign, look you up in the phone book, call your number and learn the phone has been disconnected. This is a ready-made invitation to a burglar.

Leaving any valuables visible inside your property may encourage someone to commit a break and enter.

Remove valuables when you are away from your property for prolonged periods of time.

Alcohol and firearms should never be left on your property.

Property Identification Number

Several years ago, many area properties were identified with a number which may still remain affixed to your property. The purpose of this numbered system was to assist emergency services with determining your location should they ever be called upon.

Many properties have changed ownership over the years and some owners may not be aware of the property identification number assigned.

Please be pro-active regarding this information. Stop by the Municipal Office in Sioux Narrows and confirm your information.

Why does an initiative like this work?

- reduces incidents of theft, damage and break-ins

- creates a team environment – a key to any successful initiative

- increases ownership of the problem by stakeholders

- assists the OPP in crime detection and prevention

- identifies property for easy recognition and recovery

- creates a safe living environment and reduces fear of victimization

Thanks to your response…..we have over 100-property owners in our email data base.

Please become involved today and encourage your friends and neighbours to do so too.
